In Kenya, schools for children with disabilities are often the last to receive attention and funding even though their students arguably have some of the greatest need. Because these schools have extremely limited resources, they lack sanitation facilities that meet the children’s special needs. The lack of sufficient accommodations both at special needs schools and supposedly integrated schools means that many children with disabilities simply do not attend school. One of Global Partners’ Kenyan engineers designed a special latrine with handrails, raised toilets and ramps providing children with adequate access to sanitation facilities. The design and implementation process was assessed and approved by our U.S.-based partnering engineers, and the cost per latrine is approximately $650. We would like to implement 25 of these latrines at schools in western Kenya at a cost of approximately $16,250.
