THE STORY:

We are so very lucky to have our friends and family joining us to celebrate our wedding this year. One person who will be particularly missed as we exchange vows is Laura’s father. Mike passed away after a five-year battle with Lewy Body Dementia in March of 2015, and we would like to ask you to consider donating to the Lewy Body Dementia Association as a wedding gift to us. Your donation will help to fund the research to find a cure and to support those suffering from the disease.

I’m sorry that he won’t be there to see you celebrate your marriage. I felt very lucky to have been in town and by his side just a week before he passed. Though my fondest memory of him occurred on my trip previous. For the last time I saw him, his disease had progressed to the extent that he was unable to communicate with me, aside from putting his hand on mine. The trip previous to that I introduced him to Arika and Anberlin for the first time. As we sat at dinner, I told him that I was sorry that Jackson was unable to join. I asked him if he remembered Jackson. “Jackson Riley,” he asked? His eyes lit up. “Sure, how’s my great-grandson doing?” It was no sooner that he’d said this that he started to tire and needed to go to bed. It was the first time I’d seen him in such a state and I left the house that evening upset at that. I came back the next morning to drop off Luke’s old Pack n’ Play and walked into his room to say goodbye. I communicated with unsuccessfully for about 10 minutes and then as I got up to leave and tell him that I had to fly back to Phoenix, he put his hand on mine and looked me in the eye and said, “You sure built a beautiful family in a hurry.” I got into my rental car and as I drove away I broke down with tears of sadness and feelings of utmost joy all at the same time. I couldn’t possibly have asked him to leave me with kinder words during what would come to be our last exchange of words, ever. And as I left I knew that would be our last exchange of words, ever. I know he’ll be looking down on your big day thinking to himself that “you sure built a beautiful family in a hurry”. I also know that you will find a moment…possibly as you walk down the aisle or maybe the next day while you look back and feel like something was missing…a moment that seizes you where you wished that he were there to see you on your big day, or at your side. In this moment, I hope that you can be strong and hear the same last words that he so kindly left me with. The Patriarch was so proud of his family that he had built, and he never failed to display that pride and let us know just how proud he was…all the way up to his dying days. It’s who he was…it’s why we called him The Patriarch. I can only imagine that he’ll be looking down on his daughter, and your marriage next week and that this will be his single proudest day yet. Cheers to The Patriarch and to this next chapter in your life with your beautiful family! 2 years ago
