As some people may know the fight to cure and better understand Alzheimer's is personal to me. When I was 15 years old my Grandmother, Anita Conboy aka: Mimi, was diagnosed was Alzheimer's. Shortly after she moved from NY to RI to come stay with our family, it wasn't long before the onset signs began to show themselves and then quickly progressed. When she arrived she still had that spunky (slightly scary ha ha ) attitude that we all knew but, within a few months she slowly began to slip away. It started small with needing the occational reminders of what she was doing and where she was and then progressed into much more. Before we knew it we were slowly watching her slip away, not only from us and her memories of us but, herself as well. To watch someone you love fade away is heartbreaking, to watch them not even truely remember who they are is even worse.
Hiking is a passion of mine and The Longest Day fight for Alzheimer's is the perfect way that I can do my best to help raise funds so some day friends and families will not have to watch their loved ones fade away. This year our team, Lichen Hiken will be hiking Mt. Adams, it is the second highest peak in NH. We have now become part of the NH48 chapter where they hope to have Longest Day teams on all of the NH 48 4,000 footers.
