BENEFITING: The Mercy Maternity House, Inc.
I will be running the Cypress 5k in Benton, Louisiana on April 9, 2016. I am not a runner, but am participating in this 5k in order to raise money for the Mercy House in Kenya. Here is a little bit more about my purpose as communicated by my husband, Ray:
"Five years ago, my wife told me, 'The odds aren't in her favor. She lives in a country where rape happens every day, all day long. By neighbors, fathers, brothers, even policeman...' For the first time, God lit a particular spark in our hearts. We made a very tiny connection with a someone on the other side of the world. It started with the thought of one young pregnant Kenyan girl. She'd been raped. She was barely a teenager. She was alone. But Laura wanted to do something about it.
"If you ask Laura about the bracelet on her wrist that reads 'LOVE MERCY,' or the tattoo under it that says the same, she might tell you about the Mercy House mission in Kenya. Their purpose statement says, 'Mercy House exists to engage, empower and disciple women around the globe in Jesus’ name. Engage those with resources to say yes to the plight of women in poverty. Empower women and teenage mothers around the world through partnerships and sustainable fair trade product development. Disciple women to be lifelong followers of Jesus Christ.' But there's a good chance that if you asked about the heart of the bracelet on Laura's wrist, she'd burst into tears. There's a little fire in her soul that began with a spark.
"You see, God showed his face to Laura and she wants those girls to see his face too. Maybe it's the heartache. Maybe it's the joy of holding those precious babies. There is something about what God has shown us through the girls of the Mercy House that moves Laura to love mercy. And to be honest, that's not something we're very good at doing. So Laura wants to do a tiny fundraiser for the girls of the Mercy House Kenya."
