THE STORY:

Laurel Blakie is a Freshman at Lowell High School in Lowell, Michigan, and is currently 14 years old. She sings in Choirs (Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Chorus), plays clarinet (In her school marching and concert bands), and plays piano (taking private lessons). It's safe to say that music is a huge part of her life. For the past two years, Laurel has attended the Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, singing in the Choir. She auditioned for the International program during her first year and was accepted. Unfortunately, she was not able to make the trip her first year. Her acceptance was extended to the summer 2015 choir, and now is excited at the opportunity to make the trip.

This program represents a once in a lifetime opportunity for her to continue to develop her artistic abilities in some of the greatest musical venues in Europe. While the exact Itinerary has not been set yet, previous years have seen the choir in France, England, Belgium, Italy, Germany, and other countries. In addition to the musical aspects, she is also in her second year of French language instruction, and is excited at the opportunity to be immersed in another language. The international program includes periodic rehearsals during the school year, an intensive week at the camp in Muskegon, and then three weeks touring and performing in Europe.

Her original desire was to raise the money for the trip on her own through jobs and other activities. Unfortunately, being only 14, and as active as she is, finding a paying job is not feasible. She is doing some common 14 year old side-jobs and spent many hours working over the summer. Her goal is to earn 1/4 of the money required herself. However, on this crowdrise we are attempting to raise the full amount needed. If we are able to raise her full amount here, then the money she has earned, plus any extra raised will be donated to both the Blue Lake Scholarship Fund, and the Grand Rapids Symphony Youth Chorus.

By going on this trip and being completely immersed in different cultures, she will have not only a whole new outlook on the world and it's people, but she will also have countless new experiences and the best summer of her life. Although she is nervous about being completely away from her family and her country for almost a month, she is eager to learn, to understand other cultures, and to become more independent.

Thank you so much for whatever assistance you are able to offer.
