More Americans have been murdered as a result of domestic violence than were killed in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan combined in the 11 years from 2001 to 2012.
One in five women will experience severe domestic abuse in their lifetimes, and 4.7 million women will experience domestic abuse this year. Three women are murdered every day by an intimate partner. Every nine seconds, a woman is beaten. This abuse affects some 10 million children each year.
These are our friends, colleagues, family members.
And this is not just a women’s issue. One in seven men and two in five gay men will experience domestic abuse in their lifetimes.
Eight million days of work are lost by women each year as a result of thisabuse -- the equivalent of 32,000 full-time jobs.
Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness in the United States.
Fortunately, organizations like SafePlace exist to assist these families, who often leave home with little more than the clothes on their backs. SafePlace is not just an emergency shelter. It also provides in-hospital assistance and advocacy for sexual assault victims, legal services, pet fosters, charter schools, counseling and community outreach.
Domestic abuse is devastating our community - an estimated 60,000 families in the Austin area live in fear. Will you help us support these families for a healthier community through SafePlace?
