About 8 years ago I crossed the finish line of the Marine Corps Marathon and swore to myself that I would never run another marathon again. It is an extremely time consuming and strenuous process to train for a marathon…not to mention… It hurts! Now in order to raise money for a cause that is very close to my heart, I have decided to train for the New York Marathon on November 2, 2014. I will be running the race to raise money for an educational project I have dedicated my energy and skills to see thrive. As co-founder of a community group called BeSomeOneNYC, my story begins in 2012 when I first visited, along side 4 other New York volunteers, the village of Simanjiro, Tanzania. I fell in love with the spirit of the children and teachers at the St. Namelok school and their determination to provide education and opportunities for future generations. Now, after two years of continuous efforts, I will be returning to Simanjiro once again, but this time with 12 other volunteers to build their very own school and technology center!
Building Bridges Worldwide is a not-for-profit organization committed to constructing schools, orphanages, clean water wells, medical clinics, and bridges in impoverished communities around the world. I have been part of the planning stages and construction decisions, and now with a start date in August approaching, it is time to raise the funds to construct the village's very own school! I will be part of the volunteer group that will break ground and see a very big goal set in motion. I pay 100% of my own travel expenses, so your money goes straight to the actual brick and mortar costs associated with building the school. Also, if you have been looking for a charity to invest in as your main tax deductible donation for the year, please take a moment to consider this charity since I will be able to provide pictures and a first hand account of what your dollars were able to accomplish!
Education is not easily accessible outside of the United States. One Massai leader expressed it perfectly when he said “if you think education is expensive, try ignorance”. The new school building will be the home of the St. Namelok School and will feature an e-learning center that will enable students to access a wide range of educational content. If you would like to learn more about this project or you are interested in traveling with us, feel free to contact me.
Please take a moment and consider making a donation to my cause and encourage me as I train for the New York marathon!
