Organized by: Laurie's Friends and Family
Investigations conducted by DC Police and the ATF have deduced that the fire which ravaged Laurie's condo building was intentionally set.
This new information ushers in a host of additional financial woes. On top of inadequate coverage from her insurance policy, and the condo building's insurance policy, Laurie will now be responsible for a number of legal fees and court costs. This does not even factor in the mortgage she will need to continue paying (for a home that no longer exists), her rent for temporary housing, and funds that will need to be sourced to rebuild her property in DC's competitive real estate market, nor does it take into account the replacement of all her belongings.
While Laurie is still committed to helping her neighbors, their friends and families have also started fundraising sites. So in light of the inordinate amount of unforeseen costs that continue to accrue in the wake of this terrible tragedy, we are increasing our fundraising goal to $30,000. This we, Laurie's friends and family, understand is a hopeful number. But hope is precisely what Laurie needs at this time. Thank you so very much.
A MESSAGE FROM LAURIE:
When my sister told me about this page and the support I've received under such a short period of time, I burst into tears of shock and gratitude. This entire experience has been so incredibly traumatic, overwhelming, heartbreaking, and surreal. Part of me feels so much guilt for taking any charity, but I was told that not accepting it would be bad manners. Therefore, I would like to say THANK YOU to everyone for your kind donations, words of encouragement, and prayers. I do plan on paying it forward to my dear neighbors who are also struggling and have not been as fortunate as I have been during this crazy time.
Overall, my mind is reeling with extreme emotions that I haven't been able to respond to most of you who have reached out. In all, I know I will get through it with you all by my side and for that I am truly blessed. I know Biggie and Lila are up there in that big doggie/kitty bed in the sky smiling down at their mama who's heart aches for them everyday but also feels so very lucky to be alive and not alone.
Laurie's beautiful condo building suffered a catastrophic explosion on June 4th, in NE Washington, DC. Her beloved dog Biggie Smalls and cat Lila were lost to the fire. Laurie is safe, however her downstairs neighbor did not survive. All of her belongings cannot be salvaged--the damage is irreparable.
While some of the financial loss can be covered through insurance, Laurie will still need help starting from scratch. My mom and I started this page so others could find a tangible way to support her while she copes in this traumatic time. They say no donation is too small, and we can't agree more. Friends, let's get Laurie through this.
