BENEFITING: LUNG CANCER RESEARCH FOUNDATION
EVENT DATE: Jul 23, 2011
Because of the overwhelmingly generous response to my fundraiser, I am upping my goal to $1,500!! Can't wait to surpass that and raise it again! Thanks to everyone that has donated, I am in complete awe of everyone's generosity. It is truly humbling.
I'm going to be swimming (500 yards), biking (11 miles) and running (3.2 miles) this Saturday in my first triathlon to raise money and awareness for lung cancer research. Every dollar will help and will go to an extremely worthy cause that needs more attention.
"Why?" might you ask. Well... A few months ago, my good friend Alicia asked a group of friends to do the NJ State Triathlon with her before her wedding day (August 6th!). Alicia thought it was a good way to get in shape for her special day, but more importantly, she wanted to do the race in her mom's honor. Alicia's mom, Rosey, died of lung cancer when we were freshmen in college, never having smoked a cigarette in her life. I couldn't respond "count me in" fast enough as I thought it was a beautiful tribute to her mom who had been on the sidelines of our soccer and lacrosse games, cheering us on for all of our younger years.
Unfortunately, lung cancer struck again and took the life of my dear friend's dad just last week. Diana's dad had been battling lung cancer for the last few years and passed on Tuesday. Mr. Fikaris was a remarkable man and will be dearly missed by his family, friends and the community.
Every time I’ve gone out to train over the last few weeks – whether it be swimming, biking or running – I’ve thought a lot about Rosey and Mr. Fikaris, the strength that they possessed, the battles that they fought and their love for life and family. So Saturday will be for them too. Every stroke, every pedal rotation, every step and every breath I take during my race will be for them and the others that are affected by this terrible disease.
Thanks in advance for any good luck wishes and any contributions you wish to make – large or small, every dollar will help find a cure. And if you’re in West Windsor this weekend, come to Mercer County Park on Saturday to cheer on all of the racers! You’ll see some familiar faces, including mine. I’ll be the one wearing a red tank top and smiling!
