LANDESA's Fundraiser:

Landesa Center for Women’s Land Rights

LANDESA's Photo

BENEFITING: LANDESA

EVENT: #OperationGirl

THE STORY:

Landesa partners with governments and local organizations to create laws, policies, and programs that provide secure land rights for the world’s poorest, especially women and girls.

We’ve learned that when a family has land of their own, they have opportunity and the means to improve nutrition, income, shelter. We’ve seen that when women have secure rights to land they can use that land to meet their families’ need and break the cycle of poverty. We know that when girls have access to land and understand their rights to one day own land—they can use that land to change their destiny.

Currently, more than 40,000 girls in West Bengal India are learning about their rights to land and changing their destiny through a partnership between Landesa and the Government of West Bengal. Their transformation is captured in the film After My Garden Grows, by Academy Award winning filmmaker Megan Mylan.  By partnering with governments in India, China, and Sub-Saharan Africa, Landesa is able to create broad systemic change. A well-written and implemented law, policy, or program doesn’t just help one girl; it can impact hundreds of millions at one time.

Landesa believes in the power of land. For most of the world’s poorest families, who live in rural areas and rely on agriculture for their livelihood, there is no more important asset than land. By protecting a girl’s right to access and inherit land, she has a powerful tool to lift herself, her family, and her community, out of poverty.
