As most of you know I come from an intense biking family back ground... and for that reason have shied away from any bike race in my adult life. The Leadville 100 has always intrigued me, and this year, on August 10th I am honored to be riding The Leadville 100 Mountain Bike Race on The Chris Klug Foundation Team supporting Organ Transplants. The race covers 100 miles at 10,000 ft elevation (3000 meter hoogte for my Euro friends). It will climb 14,000 vertical feet, beginning and ending in Leadville, Colorado.
When I moved to Aspen 20 plus years ago, one of the first families I met were the Estrada’s. They became my family away from home. Ron, the father, was in need of a liver transplant at the time and had been on a waiting list for years. Finally he got the call and went to Denver to undergo the surgery. I have never seen so much hope on ones face. Unfortunately Ron's body did not accept the donated liver and he passed away shortly after the surgery, way too young. Leaving behind a wife, a teenage son and daughter in her early 20-ies.
In my family a genetic disease called hemochromatosis slowly eats away at the liver by producing too much iron in the blood. If caught in time, monthly blood draws can be helpful, but sometimes the disease is not caught in time and will over time debilitate the liver.
The Chris Klug Foundation has made such an impact on organ and tissue donation awareness. With people better informed about organ and tissue donation we can make sure that the 117,000 plus people in need get access to the organs and tissues they need, to hopefully safe their lives and create a better environment for their children to grow up in. All proceeds raised will benefit the foundation's mission to promote lifesaving donation and improve the quality of life for those touched by donation. Chris Klug himself is living proof of what one can accomplish after an organ transplant. Not only is he a local athlete, who represents his cause in every race in this area, he is also an Olympic Medalist.
Please join me in raising as much as possible for this amazing cause.
