THE STORY:

The LEAF Delta Jazz Band is taking a musical journey down the road to New Orleans. These young musicians will walk in the footsteps of jazz greats as they make life changing connections to the birthplace of jazz. You can help make this trip possible by sponsoring a child today!

$900 sponsors a young musician. Your donation will provide travel, food, lodging, access to museums in New Orleans, and will ignite and inspire a child with musical memories that will last a lifetime. Money raised beyond the $14,000 goal will support the LEAF Delta Jazz Band in 2017.

Fifteen young musicians will explore the rich culture of New Orleans, March 19 - 22, kicking off the trip in true New Orleans fashion as they roll into town just in time to see the St. Joseph's Mardi Gras Indian parade.

Trip Highlights:

  • Master Class with Preservation Hall Jazz Band
  • Visit to Museum of African American History in Treme district
  • Mardi Gras Indian culture lesson with Big Chief Shaka Zulu
  • Jazz history walk by the Mississippi river
  • Visit historic French Quarter

They arrive on St. Joseph's Day, the living manifestation of an age-old ritual, preserved and practiced by the descendants of the African slaves. The tradition has roots in West African call-and-response chants and secret societies of masked warriors which are common to both African and native American cultures. When Mardi Gras Indians realized that their culture was being misinterpreted and slipping from the grips of their communities, St. Joseph's Day became an opportunity for culture preservation, freedom of expression, and educational awareness.

"I wanted to tell our history ourselves. Knowledge is power. KNOW WHO YOU ARE. Ya'll have a chance to bring peace to the world by understanding other people's cultures. Take this day as the first day of some new steps in your life. Study, travel, respect elders, put better food in your body, get out of the house, and MUSIC is the perfect tool to travel the world."

–Chief Shaka Zulu of Yellow Pocahontas Mardi Gras Indian Tribe
