They arrive on St. Joseph's Day, the living manifestation of an age-old ritual, preserved and practiced by the descendants of the African slaves. The tradition has roots in West African call-and-response chants and secret societies of masked warriors which are common to both African and native American cultures. When Mardi Gras Indians realized that their culture was being misinterpreted and slipping from the grips of their communities, St. Joseph's Day became an opportunity for culture preservation, freedom of expression, and educational awareness.
"I wanted to tell our history ourselves. Knowledge is power. KNOW WHO YOU ARE. Ya'll have a chance to bring peace to the world by understanding other people's cultures. Take this day as the first day of some new steps in your life. Study, travel, respect elders, put better food in your body, get out of the house, and MUSIC is the perfect tool to travel the world."
–Chief Shaka Zulu of Yellow Pocahontas Mardi Gras Indian Tribe
