THE STORY:

Throughout my years as a UC Berkeley student, I studied Sociology, i.e., the study of society; its origins, structure, function, and development. My major had me persistently dip my feet into the real world, exposed me to several societal issues, and on October 15th, 2013, I led a civil rights march to the US Supreme court in Washington D.C with a national Organization, BAMN, in order to defend undocumented students rights to attend the University, and to defend affirmative action. I organized marches on campus and off, against tuition hikes, police brutality, sexual assault, racism, and was an ally for the LGBTQ and immigrant student community. I identified myself as a student activist, and dispersed my beliefs on equal rights for all students, staff, and faculty, which led me to run for the Executive Vice President position of our Student Body Council. All of these experiences helped shape me as an individual, and once I graduated, I not only dipped my feet into the real world, but I was completely soaked in it, and I began to use the body of knowledge I had developed, in regards to social order, disorder, and change. In 2015, I was granted the opportunity to teach English in Panama with an international, non-profit organization called Learning Enterprises. The mission of Learning Enterprises is to expand people’s horizons through conversation-based English language classes, taught by American and International Volunteers. It is important to understand and be aware of the significant value of Education. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness, resources, and the absence of teaching methods adequate for individual students, has resulted in the education systems lack of efficiency. Knowledge is power, and I believe it is important to spread ideas and educate populations that lack the tools that will help them grow and prosper in society. During my stay in Panama, I learned about the Panamanian people, and their struggles. I helped build water reservoirs in the province of Los Santos in communities that were harshly affected by the water drought, and started an after school program for students that were being left behind in their studies. I participated in cross-cultural exchanges, built long-lasting friendships, and learned a lot about myself, and my American Privilege. Now, In 2016 I will be returning to Panama as the Program Director for this year. I will be working with the ministry of education, help guide my teacher volunteers, and place them in schools that are in need of English Teachers, and place them with families who will nurture and welcome my volunteers into the Panamanian culture. I believe society is our child, it is humanity’s creation; and we should nurture her, not neglect her. Family, Friends, Teachers, Mentors, I ask for your support, in anyway possible, to help me fundraise for Learning Enterprises, the organization that has helped me expand minds and foster creativity, and expression. With this said, I would like to thank you all for taking your time to read my mission statement; I appreciate all of your support, every and any donation will help make a difference, thank you. “I will do the best I can in this life, to be of use.” – Angelina Jolie Love, Jasmine Guillen
