EVENT: Annie's Garden Funder
Our school is located in Bakersfield, California. Living in the San Joaquin Valley we are surrounded by agricultural and many of our students have parents whose livelihoods are supported by the Ag industry. Two years ago in our After School Program we were able to purchase three small garden containers. In these containers we planted herbs, strawberries and a few ornamental plants. The pride and interest in the gardens was amazing. Lessons were given in plant development and care. Students were responsible for watering and caring for the plants. Teachers, parents and visitors were amazed by the interest of our students and the knowledge they were gaining. We are an elementary school so our students are k thru 6th grade.Last year we started a beautification project and with the generousity of a few parents we purchased some large pots and plants to place in one are of our school. As with many schools, the campus is largely cement and blacktop. This makes for a hot, dry, unappealing campus. The few plants we purchased added a touch of greenery and again our efforts were made with positive feedback and compliments. As the new school year approaches we would like to be able to continue our gardening and beautification project and make a larger impact on our campus. We would like to create areas for each grade level to maintain and learn about. Money for school gardens is a very low priority and practically nonexistent. Our original containers now need to be replaced as do the plants. Our goal is to purchase sturdier containers, additional ceramic pots, small plants, small trees and all the necessary soil and gardening tools. $2,000 would give us a good start and with additional fundraising throughout the school year our students will be able to continue learning about the importance of agriculture and plants. In addition, we discovered that school pride increased and our students were proud of what they were doing. Any donation is gratefully appreciated.
