I am riding because the American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure is so much more than a cycling event to me. The Tour de Cure is an opportunity for me to display my passion in joining the fight against diabetes. With the over 26 million of diabetics in the US currently, this number continues to grow. My commitment to help educate, raise awareness and help find a cure for a disease that does not discriminate. It is my opportunity to change the future and make a positive impact in the lives of those living from this disease which incudes babies, children, adults and seniors.
I have and will be committed to joining the ride again this year to celebrate the 25th Anniversary year of the ADA's Tour de Cure. As many of you know, diabetes has impacted my life in a tremendous way. As a spouse of a Type 1 Diabetic, I have witnessed the challenges and struggles of the life of a diabetic. I witnessed my husband almost giving up on living with this disease - eating poorly, not checking blood sugar levels, injecting the same abount of insulin every day for 18 years. The struggle took its toll on both of us and our marriage. But it was the ADA's Tour de Cure that brought closer together and turned what was once a struggle, to an incredible journey of living a healthy life with diabetes. With the level of support from friends and family over the years in joining our fight through the Tour de Cure, our commitment has grown from Team Duck Fiabetes to an organization that is committed to raising awareness, bringing famillies of diabetics together, providing support to newly diagnosed diabetics and raising funds to finding a cure.
Chances are, you also know someone who has been affected by diabetes and you already know how important it is to stop this disease. By making a donation on my behalf or by joining my team, you will be helping the Association provide community-based education programs, protect the rights of people with diabetes and fund critical research for a cure.
With your help, we will fight for a future where a parent does not have to hear that their child has diabetes. A future where an adult does not have to face the uncertain times ahead after receiving a diabetes diagnosis. A future where you and I will know that we had a part in making this possible. My hope is that I will be able to witness the day that my husband no longer has to live with this disease.
I truly appreciate your support. Together we can Stop Diabetes! #duckfiabetes
