BENEFITING: GYE NYAME EMPOWERMENT PROJECT
EVENT DATE: Oct 25, 2014
THE STORY:
Run 10 miles, jump over taxi cabs and city buses, climb hurdles and monkey bars? YES. All to support parents pursuing higher education, celebrate the memory of a great friend, and create a legacy of learning.
In 2008, my best friend and amazing person, passed away from gastric cancer. As an excellent mom, passionate educator, and loving friend, daughter, and sister - Natasha Whyte exemplified what is possible when you believe in a greater good and was committed to education.
Natasha became a parent at the age of 20 while completing her Bachelor's degree. She worked hard to graduate on time, with honors, going on to pursue and complete coursework towards her Master’s degree. Unfortunately, Natasha passed away before she could walk the stage a second time.
The Natasha Whyte Memorial Scholarship provides financial support to single mothers who are attending college; support that helps cover the little things that often come up for moms who are juggling academics and parenting – and are not typically covered by other forms of financial aid (i.e., childcare.)
In 2013, Shakayla Lawrence, a student at Smith College, was announced as the inaugural recipient of the Natasha Whyte Scholarship.
Please help me support other mothers who are focused on success – for themselves and their children.
I’ve challenged myself to raise $1,000 in ten days and complete the Urbanathlon race on Satruday, October 26, in under 1 hour and 50 minutes (I met my previous goal of completing in under 2 hours!) Any amount will help, thank you!
