The Legal Aid Society fights every day to ensure no New Yorker is denied access to justice because of poverty.

Unfortunately there is no right to counsel in civil legal matters—including for Sandy-related legal problems with housing and other essential services.

Your participation and support raises awareness and vital funds for the Society’s Civil Practice and helps more New Yorkers on the brutal edge of need.

Due to Hurricane Sandy’s devastation, our 2012 ING Marathon Runner Alberto Rodriguez was unable to race in the Society’s FIRST ING Marathon. However, as a supporter of the Society and former Co-Chair of the Society’s New Leadership Board, Alberto was able to raise much needed funds for The Legal Aid Society and make an impact in our community.

On November 3rd the Society’s New Leadership Board will once again host the Running for Justice Booster Breakfast - an event in the spirit of community and teamwork gathering emerging leaders and young professionals in the business, legal and financial communities to raise money for The Legal Aid Society’s clients and support a longstanding NYC tradition.

To understand the impact of a single $, consider this:

  • 2.3 million New York families and individuals with civil cases were unrepresented in New York State courts last year. The justice gap—the difference between the need and the resources available—is tremendous.
  • Chief Judge Jonathan Lipmann’s civil legal services task force has recently found that for every $1 invested in civil legal services $6 are returned to New York State in terms of the cost-savings for State and local governments and the local economic stimulus.
  • Front-line Legal Aid staff members see this access-to-justice gap every day as they have to turn away substantial numbers of New Yorkers who we could help if we only had the resources to do so.
  • Private fundraising is essential to fill this gap, and it makes an enormous impact on the lives of vulnerable children and adults while also improving the stability of our neighborhoods and communities throughout the City.

Your donation is a worthy investment in our community. Please consider supporting Team LAS today.
