Legal Protection for Domestic Helpers
Organized by: Matt Totty
Help us raise money to start an low-cost/no-cost pre-paid legal plan to protect domestic helpers globally, with a rewards program that makes the plan free for those who spread the word.
As one of the first Wall Street Analysts that covered Pre-Paid Legal Services (PPD-NYSE), the largest group in North America, now called Legal Shield, I'm familiar how low-cost high quality legal protection can dramatically help individuals in need. Having done significant research for many years around Asia I believe there is drastic need for such a service in the domestic helper community.
Living in Asia for many years now I've seen first hand some of the atrocities on domestic helpers most recently brought to light in the media by the Hong Kong incident involving the near death beating of an Indonesian helper by her employer. Even in westernized metropolitan cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore, many are physically and mentally abused, forced to sleep on the floor, given no time off, forced to work at the employers home and their place of business, and even pay for their own food among other things, despite clear laws and contracts that forbid this. The main problem is, the laws are not enforced and most helpers are afraid to challenge the employer in fear of losing their job and being deported back to their country and they are unaware that they can get help and most can't afford legal protection.
I've assembled a team including bankers, lawyers, helper agencies and helper organizations to build a network of lawyers and a reward system so that helpers can get free legal protection to enforce their contract rights while gaining rewards such as calling cards, western union cards and more, just for referring friends to join the organization. It will not only protect the human rights of these wonderful people, but give them an outlet to get ahead.
