Our names are Leigh Pomerantz and Amelia Howard and we are participating in the Bay to Breakers Race to raise money for our favorite place in the entire world, Daraja Academy. Daraja Academy is a secondary school for girls in Kenya, Africa. It is a school for young girls and women to continue their education beyond what the average girl in Kenya would achieve. For the past two summers, we have spent some time on campus in Kenya getting to know the girls. Both of our summers at Daraja were without a doubt the most amazing experiences of our lives. It gave both of us a chance to learn about ourselves and others in completely different ways and in a whole new setting. We could finally be independent in a way that we never really could find back at home. Although that independence is something that we love, the real reason we went back was to see the girls. We quickly learned that they are the most driven, caring, and welcoming people that we have ever met and most likely ever will meet. There is not a single day that has passed where we have not thought about them. You hear about girls like these in the newspaper and magazines and in documentaries like "Half the Sky" but meeting them and hearing their stories first hand is something that can't be captured in words. Their unwavering perseverance in their education is something that is not easily found. The girls of Daraja make every person, foreigner or not, feel special and wanted each time they set foot on campus. Some people talk about finding their one place, that place where you know you belong. Some people are never able to find that place in an entire lifetime. But for us, in a span of only two years, we were able to find that place. We truly believe that we found it at Daraja.
Thank you so much for helping us reach our fundraiser goal, any amount at all helps.
