THE STORY:

Hey Everyone! Thank you for taking the time to read about my fundraiser! I’m reaching out to my community for support and to share a bit about me. I’m extremely happy to say that after several years and various obstacles, I have graduated from UC Berkeley. I am the first in my family to earn a college degree and I know that this could not have been possible without the support of the numerous individuals who believed in me. I have been accepted into the Mills College Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program and I plan to start classes in the fall semester of this year. It has been my goal since high school to attend medical school and become a physician, but my immigration status was an obstacle that caused me to postpone my plans, until now. As an undocumented student at UC Berkeley, from 2009-2011, I did not qualify for financial aid and had limited private scholarships. Two years later, I couldn’t afford tuition and had to withdraw from Cal. When I returned in January 2013, now as a legal permanent resident, I no longer had to worry as much about the cost of housing or tuition, but I didn’t have enough time to take all of the courses required for entry into medical school, and as such, am planning to attend the Mills College Post-Baccalaureate Pre-Medical Program so that I can academically prepare to apply for medical school. The estimated cost of attendance for this 2-year program is $55,000 per year. I will be receiving a total of $18,000 in federal loans and grants. I plan to work and hope to qualify for private loans and scholarships in order to help cover some of the difference. I’m sharing my fundraiser page with you to ask for your support as I work toward financing my studies. Every cent raised through this site is appreciated because it’ll allow me to focus on my classes and worry less about how to pay for them. I am confident that the sum of my personal and academic experiences will help me grow into a physician who is able to connect with patients from many different backgrounds and with a broad variety of health care needs. The first time that I received health insurance was when I started college and I used this opportunity to start my FTM medical transition. The care I’ve received during my transition has been phenomenal because UC Berkeley’s health center provides a trans care team that supports transgender patients in all aspects of our health and wellness. In order for health care to improve accessibility and competency, it is crucial that this model of trans-inclusive healthcare be extended beyond the Bay Area. After completing medical school and residency, I plan to focus on serving the underserved populations that I identify with, especially immigrants and transgender individuals. My life experiences have helped me to understand the difficulties of not having access to healthcare, and have helped me conceptualize these experiences within a context of creating inclusive, accessible healthcare for all people, regardless of gender identity or immigration status. Your support will not only help me personally, but will eventually be returned in the work I hope to contribute to the communities I hope to serve. I sincerely thank you for your consideration and for taking the time to read about my upcoming academic plans. Please feel free to share this page with other folks and you are more than welcome to contact me for any reason. With Gratitude, Leo Soto-Alva
