Leschi Elementary is going into its 2nd school year of having a school garden. Last school year was the first time the school has ever had a school garden and wow was it embraced with gusto!
No pictures could possibly describe how much fun the kids have when they got garden time. Garden time is an amazing outdoor classroom experience that brings real life science to our the students' minds and takes it right out of the bottle. The children learn how to care for plants from seed to fruit, they get fresh air and outdoor time, they learn how to work cooperatively together, they build structures like trellises to help plants grow, they get to graze on garden fruit/vegetables each time they walk through the garden and at the end of the school year, they harvest the fruits of their labor and have a quesadilla harvest party.
The teachers of Leschi absolutely want their children to participate in garden education next school year 2014-2015. However, in order to make this garden an outdoor classroom for the school next school year, we need funding. The funding would be used toward hiring a garden coordinator, repairs and equipment, books on gardening, curriculum for gardening, and materials for harvest celebration at end of school year.
Although some PTA funding can be used for the above such as replacing equipment, most of the funding must be raised to hire a garden coordinator/educator. Right now, surviving on parent volunteers alone is not sustainable whereas having a coordinator will allow for virtually the entire school to be involved with the garden.
Please make this happen for our school community.
