Event Name: Women Startup Challenge
I founded Lessoncast because - as a teacher, principal, coordinator of professional development, and parent - I experienced firsthand the challenges of developing teachers' capacity to meet the individual needs of students. Want to know why I became a teacher?
Lessoncast is a platform designed to develop, measure, and show teaching effectiveness.
We founded Lessoncast in Baltimore, because this city is rich with cultural diversity and innovators. Despite these assets, the world has seen how great the need is especially for our youth. We’ve challenged ourselves to define the specific part Lessoncast will play in creating positive change at home and across the nation.
We've worked with City schools, the Teachers' Union, MD State Dept of Ed, and others to provide teacher resources. As always funding is a challenge, so...
For every $99 contributed to this campaign, we'll make these resources free for another Baltimore City teacher including tools for sharing lessons learned. $198 will support a pair of co-teachers. For $495, a grade level team can use the online materials to build a community library of resources for their school. $1,500 would fund a whole school initiative.
These teacher education resources include courses on youth entrepreneurship, culturally responsive teaching, personalized learning, and technology integration. The video to the left shows an example of the work we’re doing with a school in East Baltimore just blocks from the recent fire. We'll share details about these projects and provide updates via our blog. With your help, we'll be able to scale pockets of educational excellence, so that not just a few but thousands of students have a productive outlet to make sense of what’s going on around them. We have until Friday, May 29th at 1:00pm EST to make contributions.
Any contribution – even word of mouth – will help. Tweet, post on Facebook, tell a friend. You can even join the fundraising team. Thank you for believing that we can make a difference for teachers, students, and communities ready to thrive.
In case you are wondering, here's a bit of background information about Lessoncast. For more details, visit Lessoncast.com.
Why the work is important: Teacher quality is the number 1 factor in increasing student learning, and our technology applies research to scale the process for developing and supporting expert teachers. It's impossible for school principals to be professional development experts in all of the current instructional trends, and teacher preparation programs need sustainable ways to ensure their graduates have a positive impact in their future classrooms. Teachers using Lessoncast have demonstrated higher-level ability to plan lessons for students with diverse backgrounds and learning needs.
How Lessoncast works: We provide smart tools for teacher education. We’re used by teacher education programs at colleges and universities as well as K12 schools and districts. Education communities use customized modules on Lessoncast to create multimedia e-portfolio products that showcase how teachers teach and help students learn. The Lessoncast e-portfolio includes the teacher's audio narration and video of classroom practice. These e-portfolio products form a growing library of best-practices tailored for specific learning communities. Our platform brings together multimedia digital technology, research on teacher development, and the collective expertise of effective teachers to support communities of educators as they learn what works to help students meet their full potential.
