This was an idea that started on Facebook with a post from Katy Murray. Bend Spay and Neuter Project staff saw the post and offered to help by raising the money needed to order the microchip scanner and then ordering the scanner as well. We are hoping to raise $225.00 for the scanner and any additional money raised will be used to provide free microchips for cats and dogs in need. Below is Katy's original post:
I have spoken to the ODOT Bend Maintenance Crew's Manager and Coordinator, as well as the Manager of the Dispatch Center.
Everyone is on board and willing to use a universal scanner to check for a microchip on dogs and cats that have been hit on the highway. This would apply to the populated Bend area as they would plan to keep the scanner locked in a shed by the resting site.
Now we need to find a way to get ODOT a scanner. I called the Humane Society and they said they have old scanners and cannot give one up. I don't know if anyone has any suggestions for acquiring one, but we're at this point and I thought I'd bring it back to you all!
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Many thanks to everyone on here who has shared posts and searched tirelessly for missing pets. And thanks to ODOT for the willingness to go above and beyond to find the owner of a deceased and beloved pet. Let's make this work!
