Let's help Gerard
Organized by: Rebecca Ory-Hernandez
Gerard is a sweet, 8-year-old boy, who is suffering from multiple symptoms due to what the doctors think to be ulcerative colitis, Crohn's Disease, and other autoimmune disorders. He was a healthy child until last July, when he became terribly ill with an ear infection that never resolved. We believe the illness got out of control due to antibiotic resistance, gut permeabliity, and other syndromes associated with antibiotic use, including cdiff and staph. His body is in pain every, single day, though he is such a good-natured boy, you'd never know it to look at him. He is happiest surrounded by his friends and family. The hospital makes him sad, but he and his mom have a "system" that keeps him somewhat calm through treatments. We are struggling as a family to keep up with the cost of medical care, even with insurance. His treatments include chemotherapy and other medications - too long a list, a whole- foods, plant-based, healthy diet of organic foods, and many treatments that insurance will not cover. He is allergic to many things. Insurance will not cover allergy testing nor treatment. We strongly believe Gerard needs the help of experts at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, where he can be evaluated as a "complete person" and not just "one body part" to get to the root of the problem. Doctors here have concluded that they are doing what they can, and they are the best available at this time, but they do not see an end in sight to the treatment they are giving him. Nor do they speak with one another as specialists. This treatment is not sustainable. Thanks to pediatricians who have seen similar cases, we just got the referral from the primary GI specialist for a second opinion at Mayo. Insurance, again, is denying covering evaluation. No amount is too little to help us in this time of need. Let's get Gerard the help he needs.
