THE STORY:

LE MONDO wrote -

In 2013, a group of Baltimore artist-organizers came together to address the growing issues of safe, affordable art space and to create a way to collectively empower each other and share resources. The result of those conversations was Le Mondo. We’ve built the dream of an artist-owned-and-driven performing arts complex from the ground up with your help from the beginning.

Last year, YOU helped us secure our buildings from the city and in it our future on Howard Street. Now, after nearly a year of grassroots development, we are almost ready to open MONDO, our first building housing a mid-sized performing arts venue, neighborhood bar, and affordable artist studio spaces.

We're grateful for being rewarded recent grants from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development, The Reinvestment Fund, Baltimore Community Foundation, the Jim and Patty Rouse Charitable Fund, and donors like you. If we can raise $60,000 by February 3, 2017 - MONDO will open its doors to the public and host programming seven nights a week this March 2017.

We've also added special PERKS for our supporters listed here!

WHAT WE WILL DO
MONDO, our first building to open, will be a 350-person multi-use performance venue located at 404/406 N. Howard St. In addition to a sizable and flexible performance space, it will include a neighborhood bar, artist studios, office space, and a commercial retail space. Our mission is to keep this venue artist-oriented and affordable. MONDO will bring a dense and active space to the 400 block of N. Howard St. and an accessible and much-needed mid-size performance venue addition to Baltimore.

Getting MONDO open will not only provide these valuable additions to Baltimore’s art scene, it will be the jumping-off point for a groundbreaking performing arts complex driven by artists in Baltimore. It will propel the fundraising and buildout of our adjacent two buildings, which will include a black box theatre, affordable live/work apartments, workshop facilities, dance/rehearsal space, classroom space, and a restaurant. Opening our first venue, MONDO will help catapult these developments for the future.

NEARING THE FINISH LINE
Here’s where you come in. We’re about $60,000 shy of reaching our goal. That’s a lot, but not insurmountable. We want you to help us scale this last hill and open MONDO in March of 2017. $60,000 will allow us to upgrade our outdated water system and sprinklers (allowing more people in the space!) as well as enabling us finish out our outfitting the bar and equipping the performance venue. This final push will open our doors to the public for the first time!

Last year, 200 individual donors like you helped us raise $25,000. If 480 donors help us this year, we will reach our goal.

IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY I CAN HELP?
You can also become a fundraiser for us. If you would like to give more than you’re capable of giving, you can start your own fundraising profile within our page. You can set the dollar amount you’d like to raise, and you can reach out to your friends, family, and social network to reach your goal. This is a great way for us to reach this goal together.

So, if 60 people raised $1000 for the Le Mondo Project, we would reach our goal in no time! Click "Fundraise for this campaign" to set up your profile, or contact our development director by email at rahne@lemondo.org for assistance in setting up your profile.

THE HISTORY OF LE MONDO
In 2014, Le Mondo launched as a collective of artists now spearheaded by the leaders of three veteran performance companies - Annex Theatre, EMP Collective, and Psychic Readings Company. The collective won an RFP from the Baltimore Development Corporation to develop two buildings on the 400 block of N. Howard St. In addition to the two buildings, the Le Mondo’s principals, in partnership with social entrepreneur Ted Rouse, purchased the building to the south of the city buildings at 404/406 N Howard Street. With site control on over 24,000 square feet of space on Baltimore’s historic Howard Street, Le Mondo formed a non-profit organization and created a team of artists and community organizers to transform a previously abandoned strip into a multi-faceted arts and entertainment center and community hub.

We are always honored and humbled to work with the greatest arts community in America. Le Mondo is our way of providing for, and nurturing this community. We want the rest of the world to see what we in Baltimore already know: we live in an incredible city with an art scene that defies the possible and transcends the finite.
