BENEFITING: LYDIAS PLACE
EVENT DATE: Aug 01, 2013
Lydia's Place offers free hair salon and spa services to victims of domestic violence and other catastrophic circumstances. Domestic violence is a major problem and concern for women both nationally and locally. In the United States, every 9 seconds a woman is assaulted or beaten, and in Illinois alone there are over 100,000 reported cases of domestic violence every year. Victims of domestic violence suffer from a lack of self-care, but Lydia’s Place exists to address the basic physical needs of these women. Caring for oneself can play an important role in practicing stress management as well as provoke a new sense of confidence and self-respect. Self-care is especially important for these women, given that domestic violence victims lose nearly 8 million days of paid work per year in the US alone—the equivalent of 32,000 full-time jobs. Proper grooming can give these women the confidence to embrace each work day or embark on new job searches.
While the services at Lydia's Place have already impacted hundreds of lives, basic grooming and pampering is not necessarily enough to ignite passion in these women and decrease their vulnerability to domestic violence and other harmful situations. In addition to the self-confidence and happiness they obtain by receiving services from Lydia's Place, they also need to feel a sense of support from other women and a sense of belonging in the community. They need a space where they can come together and talk openly and honestly about their feelings, problems, wants, needs, hopes, and dreams, and get advice from other women who are going through similar situations. They need to feel safe. Welcome. Cherished. Loved. Valued.
Lydia's Place wants to be that safe haven for these women who have endured more than many people do in a lifetime. Our hope is to build a secure, permanent location where we can serve an even greater number of women who can create a network of love and support as they gather together in our space. We have already found an old classroom, nestled between other local businesses, where we can set up Lydia's Place. In order to make Lydia's Place a reality for women in need, we are graciously accepting monetary donations to use towards building materials and labor expenses that will transform the classroom into a fully functional salon. Our vision is to build different stations including haircare, manicures and pedicures, and facials, as well as a waiting area where women can sit and connect with one another while they wait to receive their salon services. The money raised through this fundraiser will greatly aid in helping us reach our goal of building a salon and consequently building and transforming the lives of women in our local community and beyond.
We would like to thank you in advance for considering being a part of our goal and passion, and we look forward to sharing our story with you as Lydia's Place grows!
