Let's Get Ready Brooklyn: F&M College Trip!
Organized by: Emilie Woods
EVENT DATE Jul 31, 2015
Let's Get Ready (LGR) is a national non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping lower-income students get into and through college. The Site Directors of the Brooklyn site, Emilie Woods and Nahima Uddin, who are partnered with CUNY’s Black Male Initiative, have proposed a college trip for their students (who will be first generation college students and/or qualify for free/reduced lunch) to Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, on July 31st.
Here is why we want to do this:
We think it is extremely important that our students see F&M, not only because is it a highly competitive liberal arts college outside of NYC, but also because it is a school that is committed to college access, which is the core of Let’s Get Ready. At F&M and other schools like it, great emphasis is placed on providing high achieving, lower-income students with the financial aid they need. We want to show our students that a college like F&M is within their reach.
If we raise the needed money, not only will F&M’s Office of Admission provide a tour and an information session for our students, but President Dan Porterfield has also generously agreed to meet with us. President Porterfield has a prominent voice in the national discussion around the importance of a liberal arts education and college opportunity for talented students from all income groups, and he will share this mission with our students.
A coach bus along with a light lunch for our students will cost approximately $1,500. We have about 55 students traveling with us (along with our college coaches and chaperones). Anything you can donate is greatly appreciated!
