BENEFITING: Grand Street Settlement
Let’s pretend you are a Magic Bean.
With the advent of New York City’s EaryLearn program, Grand St. Settlement was awarded two new early childhood centers, the former Bethesda Day Care Center at 319 Stanhope St. in Bushwick, Brooklyn, and the former Coalition for Human Housing Day Care Center at 60 Essex Street in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The program opened on October 1st, 2012, utilizing a Head Start/Day Care Collaboration model and introducing the higher Performance Standards of Head Start to the centers' families. Grand St. Settlement retained its centers at 300 and 294 Delancey Street in the Lower East Side through the EarlyLearn model. We are proud of our Early Childhood Services’ unified standards, services and curricula as well as the dynamic and collaborative team that have proven to be instrumental in the community’s investment in our children.
Grand St. Settlement now operates five early childcare education sites – four on the Lower East Side and one in Bushwick. Across these locations, programs assist children from infancy to age five in meeting emotional, social, cognitive and physical developmental needs while educating parents on the critical importance of investing in a child’s education and care. With our additional classroom site, we served 234 children in the Lower East Side and 74 in Bushwick. This is consistent with the agency’s long history of providing high-quality comprehensive early childhood education. Although the agency’s sophisticated and acclaimed blended, collaborative childcare and early education model paved the way for funding from the New York City Administration for Children’s Service (ACS), recent Sequestration cuts pose challenges to the road ahead. We remain dedicated to maintaining standards and levels of excellence on par with national trend and are unshakable in our belief in the importance of investing in early education; its importance to life-long health and learning is so immense that it is one of the most critical elements of their achievement.
Close your eyes, sit very, very still and focus. Feel yourself take root. When you feel the first shoot break the surface - don’t stop. Keep growing. The sky is not the limit but just the beginning, and we have a lot to do. You see, as a Magic Bean, you are destined to become a Giant Beanstalk – the kind that climbs up, up and away and leads to the place where dreams come from, where happiness and passion are born. The kind that is perfect for climbing.
And people will climb, for you, Magic Bean, hold the power to lift a child out of the poverty she longs to leave behind, to boost children of first-generation immigrants up toward opportunities for education and to put a future bright with possibilities within reach of a small child.
We invite you to join us in the spirit of pretending, a cherished tradition upheld by Grand St. Settlement since World War II, when we began our Let's Pretend Ball. While so many of our neighbors are in need of so much, it's important to us that 100% of the proceeds go towards what really matters - not to a gala or special event.
For half a century, we have harnessed the power of imagination to create a very real difference for thousands of at-risk and vulnerable New Yorkers. Won't you join us? We know you can be great - to do tremendous good. You might feel like just one tiny little bean, but trust us - you contain enormous potential.
So you, Magic Bean, just grow.
We'll help them climb.
