Last year in my environmental science class, my wonderful teacher showed my classmates and I The Cove, a documentary framing Ric O'Barry's efforts to end the horrors that innocent dolphins experience every day in Taiji, Japan and in general, captivity. For those of you who are not familiar with this documentary or the harsh reality that is occurring in Taiji, these Japanese fishermen choose dolphins to be destined for dolphin shows and slaughter the rest to market as meat labeled as whale (this is because dolphin meat has an extremely high mercury content and not safe for human consumption. Their reasoning behind doing this is not clear.) The first time I watched this, I cried for these acts of injustice toward such emotionally intelligent marine mammals. It is because of these horrors that I am participating as a team member in this fundraiser, alongside other wonderful people who are dedicating their time to raising money for this cause. The money will go toward Ric O'Barry's Dolphin Project entirely and will support their efforts as his team tries to end this unnecessary slaughtering and free dolphins from captivity. Thank you for your help and let us provide a holiday service to these beautiful creatures who have no other way of fighting back.
