BENEFITING: GHANA HEALTH AND EDUCATION INITIATIVE
EVENT DATE: Jun 13, 2011
This summer, I volunteered in Humjibre, Ghana for the Ghana Health and Education Initiative. GHEI is a small and very effective organization that runs a variety of health and education programs for the 2,000 children of Humjibre. They have built the village's only library and have implemented supplemental classes including an early literacy program. There are three international staff and four local staff that run these programs throughout the year, and they host volunteers during the summer to help with some of their specific initiatives: a read and play project, girls empowerment project, malaria prevention project, and community building project.
I participated in the Read and Play program, a project aimed to increase and improve childhood literacy. It used the platform of a Read-a-thon, a three-week celebration of literacy, in which the children came to the library for two hours every day after school. The volunteers and I spent time with the children in the library during this Read-a-Thon, reading with them. Our goal was to give them encouragement and get them excited about reading, which hopefully will carry them throughout their academic careers. We worked with kids between the ages of two and fifteen and at all different skill levels: from those who simply wanted to look at pictures, to advanced reader who were trying to improve their reading comprehension.
In addition to the Read-a-Thon, the other volunteers and I gave presentations in every classroom, in every school in the village about the importance of books and the correct way to take care of them. This was meant to further emphasize the importance of education and literacy in particular.
GHEI believes that early exposure to learning and high quality instruction play a fundamental role in ensuring a child's later success. Although it is improving since GHEI's inception, few of the children can continue on to senior high school due to financial and other social reasons. However, by fostering a love of education GHEI hopes to change this and inspire the children to strive to continue their education.
However, for many of the children this is only possible with the help of GHEI's scholarship fund. Right now, almost all donations and grants from generous donors go towards this scholarship fund, which will allow the top students from Hujimbre to go to senior high school and then hopefully to university.
I am trying to raise money for GHEI's scholarship fund so that the wonderful, motivated children I met can have a chance to pursue their dreams.
