This summer, I will be volunteering in Humjibre, Ghana for the Ghana Health and Education Initiative. GHEI is an amazing charity that runs a variety of education programs for the children in Humjibre including a library, early literacy program and youth education program.
My focus will be the GHEI Read and Play program, a project to increase childhood literacy. The volunteers and I will design and run a two-week celebration of literacy using GHEI's yearly Read-A-Thon as a platform.
Throughout the Read-A-Thon, we will work one-on-one and with groups of children to teach the proper ways to handle books, and will help to develop the children's love for learning by exploring different themes of literature. We'll share the love of reading with all different levels of readers – from those that just enjoy the pictures to more proficient ones.
Early exposure to rich language experiences and high quality instruction play a fundamental role in ensuring a child's later success. Children who experience early success in school are far more likely to graduate from high school, pursue higher education and attain jobs.
I am so passionate about this cause and can't wait to visit the students. I would love to help make a difference in their lives and inspire them.
I'm hoping to raise money to help fund the Read and Play project at GHEI so that they can continue to bring in volunteers every year and have access to more tools for the students
GHEI is a non-profit village-based organization, funded solely through grants and generous donations from individuals who believe in their work.
