BENEFITING: TOM LANTOS FOUNDATION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS AND JUSTICE

EVENT DATE: Dec 07, 2012

THE STORY:

Take Action and Donate to Help Support the Front Line Funds Program of the Lantos Foundation for Human Rights & Justice

Through this grant program, the Lantos Foundation, in its efforts to promote human rights initiatives worldwide, has awarded thousands of dollars to individuals and organizations that are on the front lines of human rights struggles.  Our funding of vital human rights projects can only continue with ongoing donations.  Some of our Front Line Fund recipients are:

  • Movement Against Violence & Impunity in Africa (MAVIA) helps to find solutions to the problems of child abuse, teenage pregnancy, exploitation of young women, inequality, injustices and unlawful imprisonment and detention of the ordinary people and non-convicted persons, poor education by raising awareness, teaching about human rights.  MAVIA has an overall goal to help correct and strengthen the legal system in Liberia whereby justice will serve regardless of status, race, sex or affiliation.  The Lantos Foundation is helping to fund the establishment of new MAVIA Peace & Human Rights Clubs where a series of activities are conducted including workshops/seminars, community outreach combined with dramas and displays providing education and awareness about conflict management and human rights issues.
  • People First of New Hampshire is a non-profit that supports people who experience disabilities to self-advocate and speak up about their rights.  One of the goals of the organization is to help close institutions where people with disabilities are wrongfully housed across the United States and the world.  The Lantos Foundation has helped to fund the distribution of a powerful toolkit containing a film and advocacy booklet called Institutions: Close Them!  The film depicts the lives of five individuals past and present who once lived in an institution and have successfully found lives of meaning and purpose in their communities.  The booklet provides a guide for bringing groups together to advocate for the closure of institutions.
  • Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund helps the Jewish population aged 3 – 21 and their families in the Shomron and Northern Jordan Valley in Israel where the children’s human rights have been violated.  They have lost the right to a) feel secure in their homes and communities without the constant threat of terrorists infiltrations, b) feel secure in travel to and from school without the constant threat of terrorist attacks on the roads, c) carry on their day-to-day lives as children, without being exposed to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), and finally, d) access to medical and therapeutic care for PTSD. The Lantos Foundation provides funding for Shiloh Therapy Center treatments for PTSD which include music, art, movement, equine riding therapy, and animal-assisted therapy.  The goal of the treatment and therapeutic programs is personal empowerment, first to heal the child, then to support their academic and social achievements.  The therapeutic activities support the development of the many communities impacted so profoundly by human rights violation from terrorism.
