HOSA is a primer student organization that is devoted to preparing students for the medical field by teaching them quality, compassionate health care. HOSA is a national organization with 48 state associates, and over 2000 local chapters. Our local chapter is over 40 members large, and growing.
As a chapter, we try to do everything we can to change the lives of people around our community. We devote every month to a new service project, which centers on helping a worthy medical charity. In October, we raise awareness and money for breast cancer. In December, we have a snow shoveling campaign to raise money for juvenile diabetes. In February, we have a carnation sale to raise money for the Leukemia/Lymphoma society of Wisconsin. Throughout the year, we also collect funds in order to buy stuffed animals to donate to the kids in the terminal and cancer wings of the local hospitals. If we can change one person’s life, or simply put a simile of the face of one person, all of our work and effort will be worth it.
We also participate in competitive events through HOSA. HOSA offers 22 medically themed events such as Medical Terminology, CPR/First Aid skills and Medical Spelling in which members can compete. The events require members to do outside research, and because they are active and engaged in their learning, they become even more prepared for their future health careers. If members place at the state competition, members have the chance to attend the National Leadership Conference in June. The NLC is an unforgettable, once in a lifetime opportunity that any HOSA member would be lucky to attend. Members can attend workshops on how to become better leaders, learn about creative ideas for service projects, and how to get other members involved, listen to actual health care professionals, and create friendships with members who reside across the nation.
Unfortunately, Nationals is very expensive, averaging around $1000 a person. Many of our local members reside below the poverty line, and simply cannot afford the costs on their own. We do a ton of fundraising as a chapter, but it is hard to raise money for both service projects and our chapter, and people simply do not have the money right now to give. Setting up, and running service projects also is quite pricey, and it is hard to find available funds. We have not been able to send anyone to Nationals in quite a while.
We are asking for your donations so that we as a chapter can attend Nationals, and so that we can continue our work with our service projects. Please help change our lives by donating, and allow us to continue changing other people’s lives in return.
