Remembering Liam, Supporting His Family
From Toronto, while vacationing with his family in Miami, Liam Wong (son of Roger and Jackie Wong), was tragically taken from us on January 2, 2015. This tragedy is incomprehensible; it makes no sense and we are all in shock.
Liam was instantly killed when struck by a reckless driver while crossing the street at a Miami intersection.
Although the full details of this tragedy are still unknown (due to an ongoing police investigation), this much we know: His mother and older brother, following closely behind, watched in horror as Liam and his father were struck.
They had just finished a family dinner celebrating Roger’s birthday and were on their way back to the hotel when a speeding car came around the corner and struck them.
The driver is in custody awaiting formal charges (which we now have reason to believe will be vehicular manslaughter).
Liam’s father Roger is a longtime, trusted friend and valued employee. How something like this could possibly happen to such a good man of character and integrity, seems so unjust.
Transfered from ICU yesterday, Roger will be in a hospital thousands of miles away from home recovering for some time. Although suffering severe head and spinal injuries, CAT scans seem to suggest that he'll make an eventual recovery. We won’t fully know the extent of Roger's injuries for some time but we are praying for a full recovery.
Liam was our child, too.
Understandably in shock, far away from the support and comfort of their family, community and home, it is yet too soon to know how and when the family will be able to return home and be able to lay little Liam to rest.
As you can imagine, on vacation in another country, the cost of this will be astronomical for them, physically, emotionally and financially.
His family is our family and our hearts are heavy and broken. Of course, no amount of money can make any of this right or bring Liam back; but that's not what this is about.
Liam deserves to be brought back home to be laid to rest. Roger deserves the best immediate and long-term care for a full recovery. The entire family must do this together with dignity, privacy and solitude. The family, losing its bread-winner indefinitely, deserves food on the table and time to heal.
The cost of this is massive in every sense of the word...
We are not going to stand around and watch them figure this out on their own. We're going to help them make ends meet so they don't have to worry about the bills.
If every person reading, donated the equivalent of just one hour of their pay, (and most importantly, 5 minutes writing a word of kindness and support), we could significantly reduce this family's pain and suffering.
Please give, generously.
Please find a reason to give something from the heart. Please know it's your thought contribution that counts, not necessarily the amount. (100% of all proceeds will go directly to the family.)
No contribution is too small. It’s the gesture that matters. Let us show the world our care. It is the right thing to do.
P.S. Updates and progress will be shared as they develop.
Jan. 7, 2015 – Update: I just spoke with Jackie, Roger's wife, and she expressed how touched they are by all the support and words of comfort from outside the family circle. It has made them feel loved and comforted to the utmost degree. The family is having a cremation ceremony on Friday in Miami, they will then figure out next steps to getting Roger home. There will be a memorial at home and that's when they will need the support from all of us. Jackie also expressed her gratitude to everyone who has shown generosity. Needless to say, they will require every penny to get through this.
Thank you to all who have shown support. –JK
