BENEFITING: Girls On The Run Rhode Island
EVENT DATE: Jun 01, 2014
Hello all -- I'm racing in the Girls on the Run RI 5k on Sunday, June 1st, so I thought I'd do a bit of a flash fundraiser for their (fabulous, amazing) organization. Any contribution would be very much appreciated! I may even buy you a beer (or wine, if you're like that) if I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to do so. Either way, you will get a huge, personal thank you from me for whatever your generous soul is able to spare.
Girls on the Run is an organization that I'm really excited about, and I'm especially proud that my elementary school, The Gordon School, is a big part of the program's success in Rhode Island. Girls in the 3rd through 8th grade participate in the program in small groups at sites throughout the state over the course of ten weeks. The girls train for their 5k event during these sessions, while also participating in activities and discussions that encourage them to become confident, independent, and socially engaged individuals. So naturally, as an educator/academic and as an athlete, I think they're pretty darn cool.
Sports, and running in particular, have been essential to my own personal development, and my love of athletics began when I was a student at Gordon. I am incredibly lucky to have had the support and encouragement from such an early age that I needed to realize and develop confidence in my own potential as an athlete and as an independent, determined individual, capable not only of dreaming, but doing all the things I've hoped (and still hope) to do.
Girls on the Run provides this essential support and encouragement, and is able to do so for any girl who wishes to participate because of the donations that enable them to guarantee financial aid. This unconditional accessibility for girls who may not otherwise be able to participate in such a program is part of what makes this organization so very awesome. So in the next few days, if you can help me reach my $500 fundraising goal, we will provide enough funds to cover the cost for three girls to attend the program, which would be pretty wonderful.

The 5k will be at Roger Williams Park on Sunday, June 1st at 9AM. I'll be working my butt off this week to see if I can beat my 23:42 PR (I just ran a 25:38 this past weekend, after taking most of the winter off from running to nurse a weirdly messed up foot. But hopefully emerging from the humid swamp of Florida will help give my pace a boost!) Having played so many team sports, I respond well to encouragement in the form of yelling, so feel free to shout at me, digitally or in person, to step it up, light a fire under it, etc.
If you think you might be interested in participating in the 5k yourself, here's the race registration link: http://www.imathlete.com/events/EventDetails.aspx?fEID=17131
Finally, all my thanks for your interest and support -- let's help keep these awesome girls running!
