WHAT IS THE LIBERTY TREE SOCIETY:
The Liberty Tree Society is dedicated to the celebration of the “Liberty Tree”- America’s first symbol of Freedom. The story of the “Liberty Tree” is the story of America’s first Declaration of Independence. Influential men, including Paul Revere and John Hancock were part of a group of early protestors of British rule…given the name the “Rebellious Nine”. Beneath the sheltering branches of a great American elm, known as the “Liberty Tree”, the Boston Tea Party was born. Their flag, the Rebellious Stripes, was often flown from the “Liberty Tree” during their meetings.

WHAT WE DO:
Elm Research Institute initiated the Liberty Tree Society to make known the spirit of those times and the central role played by the ”Liberty Tree” in America’s past, present and future. Our goals follow
1) celebrate Liberty Tree Day on August 14th every year
2) establish a Liberty Tree Memorial in your town
3) introduce “Whatever Happened to the Liberty Tree” as a classroom project in your local school.
4) encourage your town to plant Liberty Elms .

Goal : to establish 1,000 Liberty Tree Memorials; living tributes to our country’s freedom

We began 47 years ago to gain support from private donors for Dutch elm disease research. Our efforts led to the development of the disease resistant AMERICAN LIBERTY ELM. Over 300,000 Liberty Elms have been planted in 45 states since we began distribution in 1984. More than half were planted in public places by volunteer groups such as Boy & Girl Scouts, 4-H, students and others. If you know of a volunteer group who would like to help establish a Liberty Tree Memorial call us 800-367-3567.

We hope you will go on-line when you have an opportunity and suport our efforts by planting a Personal Memorial  www.libertytreesociety.org
