BENEFITING: Somaly Mam Foundation
I really want to raise awareness about the issue of sex trafficking, child sex prostitution, and modern-day slavery. My heart has been sad and I've been angry about these issues, specifically child sex trafficking, for years but I have been overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problem and have not done anything. I hope to go to Cambodia one to help in the rehabilitation centres, but for now I am running this half-marathon as a challenge and a daily reminder as I train to keep the girls and Cambodia in my heart and prayers.
I am running the Tauranga half-marathon on April 13, 2014 to raise awareness and money for the Somaly Mam foundation. I chose this foundatoin to raise money for because the founder is a sex-trafficking surviver herself; she is someone to look up to as she has overcome a life of trauma and abuse and through resilience is rescuing young girls as young as 4 from brothels in Cambodia.
If you would like to donate feel free, anything I raise I will donate directly to the shelters and healing centres in Cambodia that Somaly has established for the rescued victims.
If you can't donate, I totally get it, but please read up on some of these issues and talk about it, sex trafficking happens everywhere in the world and it needs to stop!
Here is some information on the programs that the organization has for rescued girls:
