BENEFITING: Somaly Mam Foundation
The Somaly Mam Foundation is dedicated to ending modern slavery and empowering survivors of sex traffickig as part of the solution. Since 1996, Cambodian survivor and activist Somaly Mam has rescued thousands of girls and women from exploitation and abuse, aiding them on a journey to health, hope, and economic independence. In 2007, she co-founded the Somaly Mam Foundation with two young Americans to raise funds for victim services, to elevate the survivor voice and empower survivors as next-generation leaders, and to build partnerships toward policy changes and advocacy efforts.
Survivors of human trafficking are not weak: they are strong, resilient, and have demonstrated incredible courage in overcoming their tortured past. Through SMF's partner centers for recovery and skills training in Cambodia, these women and children gain a basic education and learn employable skills, some even becoming entrepreneurs in their own right. Below are examples of ways your donation can make an impact:
- $52 provides a month of nutritious meals for a woman or girl living in a recovery center
- $135 covers shelter services and provisions for one resident for one month, including hygiene kits, clothing, accommodation expenses and recreational activities.
- $300 provides medical exams and blood tests for young women and girls who visit the free medical clinic in Phnom Penh. As they learn about the shelter's services, this visit can also be the first step on the road to rescue, recovery, and empowerment.
- $1,200 funds one ‘start-up kit’ for a woman launching her own business, including supplies, materials, and follow-up support.
-$2,400 provides one year of university tuition for six survivors
-$5,000 supports "Train the Trainer" Legal Services education to raise awareness of sex trafficking in the Cambodian legal community, empowering them to advocate on behalf of survivors
Your donations are critical in helping rebuild the lives of women and children who have escaped from exploitation in Southeast Asia's sex trade, and in preventing and ultimately eradicating the crime of sex slavery. Together, we can give them a voice in their lives, and create a world where women and children are safe from slavery. To learn more, visit www.somaly.org.
