BENEFITING: Cystic Fibrosis Foundation
Light Reading’s 2017 Walk the World team is supporting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to honor our colleague Alison Diana’s teenage daughter, who has cystic fibrosis.
Cystic fibrosis is a life-shortening condition – most sufferers die before they are 40. However, thanks to recent strides in medical research, new medications are slowly entering the market, providing life-changing hope to patients and their families.
Cystic fibrosis is an often overlooked condition. It doesn't get the attention of cancer, diabetes or other health problems, making it more challenging to raise its profile and get funding.
It’s is a horrible genetic condition that attacks a child’s lungs. Many sufferers also have digestion problems. All cystic fibrosis sufferers are extremely underweight, because they burn up calories at a very high rate. Many go on to suffer diabetes, as their diets include sugar and fat to compensate for their high metabolisms.
We chose the cystic fibrosis Foundation because we think it’s a great opportunity to give a really big helping hand to patients, one that truly will make a difference to thousands of kids and their families – and especially one of our own.
