LightBenders - A Photography School for Disabled Veterans
Organized by: Christopher Chaffee
LightBenders is a photography instruction curriculum that health care professionals feel will be of great value and assistance to our growing disabled veteran community.
Based on 2 years research and consultation with numerous doctors and counselors within the VA medical system and their recommendations, ‘LightBenders’ is a free 8 week course of photography training specifically tailored for veterans who struggle with the challenges of post military service. Specifically, veterans who deal with the effects of PTSD and other non physical and physical combat related injuries.
These experts in the treatment of PTSD and depression agree that if an individual is shown the ability to express beauty from within through a creative endeavor, it can be of great therapeutic value in their path of healing. Literally, we're using light to assist in bringing them out their darkness in a tangible manner which they witness first hand in photographic art which they themselves will create.
I am currently in need of funds to purchase photography equipment to outfit 6 students, this will be semi-professional digital SLR cameras and lenses for their use during the program. I am a retired professional photographer and veteran, decorated for service in Vietnam. I will receive no compensation for my work in this program. All funds will go directly into LightBenders expenses for equipment, field trips and alumni workshops.
Currently, 22 veterans take their lives everyday in America, including many who have tried conventional treatment, counseling and medical therapies. Every citizen in America wants to see these numbers reduced. Alternative therapies such as LightBenders are showing remarkable success in helping these struggling veterans, including Healing Waters and Heroes and Horses to name a few. We pick up where conventional treatment ends, and many who enter these alternate programs credit them as life saving endeavors.
They were there for us. Please, let's be here for them. On behalf of the heroes this program will serve, I thank you...
