EVENT: Pittsburgh Marathon 2016
EVENT DATE: May 01, 2016
Please read to the bottom to see the *** BONUS CHALLENGE ***
Hey everyone, in a couple months I'll be running the Pittsburgh Half Marathon and supporting Lite of Life Rescue Mission. Here's why:
During my time in Salt Lake City, Utah I worked as a volunteer with high school students. We enjoyed camping, paintballing, and several other fun trips but the students and I were always most impacted by our time spent with the people at the Road Home, and Rescue Mission in SLC.
We served hot meals and drinks on cold nights, provided blankest, socks and shoes. What impacted everyone most deeply, especially the students, was having a conversation, talking and getting to know the people. As we built relationships it changed the perspectives and hearts of teenagers and adults alike.
I've recently moved to the Pittsburgh area, and Light of Life is a place where perspectives and hearts are being changed. Please join me and support me to reach out in a small way. Please donate, but also, please consider getting involved and see how it changes YOUR life...
To give a little extra motivation for my training and your giving. Please consider this bonus:
My goal for the race is 1 hour and 30 minutes. That would be an average pace of 7 min/mile for the entire thirteen miles. (My current pace in training is about 8:20 min/mile so I've got a way to go!) If I beat my goal of 1:30 for the race you agree to double down on your donation.* ($10 becomes $20, $100 becomes $200 etc.) If I go over my goal time of 1:30, I will match your initial donation.
IF YOU'RE 'IN' FOR THE ***BONUS CHALLENGE*** PLEASE INDICATE (***BONUS CHALLENGE***) IN THE REMARKS SECTION OF YOUR DONATION. Thanks again!

Light of Life is well-known for providing meals and shelter, but offering basic needs is only one aspect of a broader, multi-faceted mission. We aim to transform the lives of those we serve with faith-based counseling, education, and rehabilitation programming designed to provide essential life resources and empower people to become addiction-free, wage-earning citizens, caring parents, skilled employees and lifelong learners. We serve approximately 1,000 unduplicated people each year.
Light of Life provides comprehensive services to the poor and homeless which fall under two main areas: the Recovery Program and Samaritan Ministries. Our Recovery Program delivers a holistic approach to address the root causes of homelessness and poverty, combining housing with addiction recovery, education and career training, life skills, spiritual enrichment, and other vital services. Samaritan Ministries provide critical points of entry for indigent people seeking help for immediate needs including food, shelter and spiritual outreach.
Light of Life aims to help people to:
Stabilize their lives through access to basic needs
Build a foundation for living addiction-free lives
Have access to educational resources
Learn new skills to achieve career goals
Gain self-esteem, self-determination and essential life skills through group and individual counseling
Gain a sense of hope and purpose through Light of Life’s loving, supportive environment
By equipping those less fortunate with tools to overcome poverty and other adversities, Light of Life helps improve the quality of life for the next generation. With functional, caring parents, children have the chance to succeed in school and grow up as healthy, productive citizens. As a result, Pittsburgh communities can grow and prosper.
Here are some of the ways we’ll use the funds you raise:
$2.58 covers the cost of one meal
$40 cover the cost of one night of shelter for one person
$385 covers the cost of one day of programming for our Women and Children’s Program
$1,000 covers the cost of mattresses, pillows, bedding, and towels for the shelter for one year.
