BENEFITING: The Nanubhai Education Foundation
EVENT DATE: Feb 23, 2013
I'm going to do my first 10k. Once you've stopped laughing and pulled yourself back into the chair you just fell out of, I'll explain.
Surat, the big city nearest Kadod, is hosting a very large (10k+ people) night marathon/half/10k/5k. I'll be one of those people with the safety pinned numbers lagging at the very back of the line just hoping I make it.
Why would I do such a thing to myself? For a good cause. Living here in India these past four months, I've seen firsthand just how badly the education system needs an intervention. My students (all 360 of them) are wonderful. They're bright and excited and marvelously sweet and hopeful. My co-teachers are just as bright and excited and marvelously sweet and hopeful. And my co-teachers are really great and talented teachers. They're also an anomaly in rural India. Nanubhai Education Foundation (my organization) has spent the last two years training them in modern English pedagogy, showing them how to be the best possible teachers they can be.
Here in India, we don't have a lot of resources to work with, but we have so much potential. My work at Nanubhai is all about helping local teachers harness that potential. I'm willing to walk, pretend to run, and even limp to show my support. Any little bit that you can help me get there, I'd greatly appreciate.
If you're interested, check back occasionally-- I'll add more photos as the doom-line nears.
