November 6, 2011 is the big day. I will be running the NYC Marathon! This is always something that I've wanted to do. I don't think that I can be any happier and I can't believe that I get to run it. The road to NYC is going to be so exciting, not to mention a bit tough and nerveracking. And let's not forget about the marathon itself. It's going to be a fun, unforgettable experience, but I am no dummy. I know that the 26.2 miles will be grueling, and I am going to need a lot of support to get me to the finish. (I've heard that mile 21 is a huge jerk.)
This is where you come in. I've partnered with Crowdrise and volunteered to fundraise for Team for Kids. Unfortunately the money doesn't go straight to my pocket, but your support does. As my hip flexor and shins are killing me while I'm running up 5th Avenue on November 6, your support and donations will help be get over that wall and bring me to the finish. So let's all work together to give back, and bring me to the finish. Any donation will be more than appreciated whether it be $1, $5, $10, or even a dollar a mile (that's $26.20). This is going to be totally awesome, and is going to give me way more of a kick than any glucose cube could. Every dollar counts. I'm in, and I want you in!
About 1 out of every 7 children is obese, and this issue is so severe that the government declared it a national epidemic. Being obese and overweight during childhood and adolescence significantly increases the risk of developing hypertension, high cholesterol, orthopedic problems, depression, and type II diabetes. Main contributing factors to obesity are a sedentary lifestyle and a poor diet. Unfortunately, the obesity rate is higher in low-income families.
Team for Kids was established by New York Road Runners as a vehicle to bring low-cost community based health and fitness programs to youth in underserved communities who normally wouldn't have access to regular physical activity. This amazing program serves about 100,000 children yearly in more than 400 schools in NYC, the nation, and South Africa. The team equips children with the tools they need to become physically fit and help combat the obesity epidemic. It also provides kids with a wealth of knowledge around character building, teamwork, and goal-setting.
Funds raised by Team for Kids help set up running-based programs, training for coaches, incentives for children to participate to strive for fitness, entry fees and transportation, and resources to continue to establish programs. I even heard a story that Team for Kids provided a youth with running sneakers after he showed up with holes in the pair that he owned.
So, here I am, asking all of you, my supporters to join me and consider making a donation. To donate, just click the donate button, you can't miss it. I appreciate it more than you know. Take it one step further and spread the word to your friends and family, or even join the team. Be with me on November 6 for an unforgettable experience. Cheers!
