BENEFITING: Cypress Hills Local Development Corp., Inc.
I am one of those people lucky enough to have a job that I absolutely love. As a first generation college student who grew up with a ton of privilege and support, I am now in a position where I can support other first-generation college students - and an incredible team of college counselors and youth leaders - in the fight for equitable college access. In my division alone, our team runs groups for 9th and 10th graders, a community center where folks can drop in for college support, a persistence team that follows young people through college, and a whole team collaborating with three community schools to run programming for this exciting new initiative. It's the best! What's even better is that CHLDC doesn't stop there. Not only do we have a College Success Division working to get young people to attend and graduate college, but we develop affordable housing and organize tenant associations. We help young people to organize and improve local public schools. We run afterschool and summer camp programs, employment programs for young adults, ESOL and high school equivalency classes, and local farmers’ markets. Together, our programs strengthen the area’s physical and economic infrastructure, provide quality services, and foster local leaders. And in total, about 9,000 people each year benefit from our work. I am incredibly proud of the work that this truly local, grassroots organization does on a daily basis for residents of Cypress Hills and East New York. Because we focus so intently on these specific neighborhoods, we are limited in funding sources and often depend on government contracts and foundation grants. Under this current adminstration, we could stand to lose millions of dollars in funding as early as next year depending on what the upcoming federal budget looks like. I truly believe in the transformative work of this organization, so any support goes a long way! Any money raised will be used where it's most needed, but all of it will go towards funding amazing work spearheaded by community residents and passionate staff. Thanks for your contribution!
