Lisa's Power House PHighters
Thanks for visiting this site. I am Samantha MCCafferty and have wanted to volunteer in the community, especially at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. We thought I'd easily get in because my Aunt, Lisa Thornton has worked years in the ER and/or Call Center, but because they won't accept minors for year round volunteering, that door closed. I quickly realized that the way I could help both kids and adults alike was right in front of me...supporting the Pulmonary Hypertension Association (PHA) & my Aunt Lisa Thornton, who got this awful diagnosis in April 2014. Because this disease is so rare, it doesn't get the fundraising & donations it needs to promote on-going research or help with patient services for quality of life issues. Unlike cancer or other diseases, PH gets little to no media attention.
This news was devastating as we learned more about Pulmonary Hypertension, which causes increase pressure in the lungs requiring the heart to run at a marathon speed 24/7, causing it to weaken, and can lead to heart failure, and early death. It's was scary to hear the disease described as "PROGRESSIVE" and "LIFE THREATENING" & there's currently "NO CURE". Those three words don't belong in the same sentence--it's heartbreaking. Also, PH doesn't discriminate it affects every nation, tribe, race, and age. In fact, for children there are NO (ZERO) approved FDA medications. Aunt Lisa has been on multiple meds, not to cure her, but with hopes that it will stabilize her...but we still don't know.
Since PH, Lisa's spent 315# days at Piedmont hospital, much of which was in the ICU. I'm not allowed to visit in the ICU or when she's on isolation with masks, so I miss her and hate getting bad/sad updates from my parents sometimes, but it's a hard disease! Also, PH has ruined some of our one-on-one time. In June, she kidnapped me for mani & pedis and a trip to Ulta. That was so fun, but I don't ever know when those outings will come again. We use to do them often, but PH changes everything.
Aunt Lisa still fights for her life and does it while loving us & smiling the whole way thru! Even tho my aunt's diagnosis is serious & the prognosis is scary, there is still HOPE to find a cure. Can you help reach my goals & join "Lisa's Power House PHighters" and donate or participate in one or more of items below!
1- Help me raise $1000 for the PHA, so more research can be done. We need a cure! Even a $5 donation helps!
2. We'd like to have at least 25 people pre-register for the 13th Annual PH walk in Cobb County on Oct 8th 11a-2:00pm. It's a family environment & kids & dogs (on a leashes) are welcome. To pre-register (before Sept 12th) it cost $25/adult and $10/child (prices go up by $10 after Sept 12th). The cost includes lunch, a goody bag with a t-shirt, silent auctions, door prizes, a playground for children, music, & great fellowship & fun talking on picnic tables or on blankets on the lawn! Come even for ME, even if you don't know my aunt personally...she'll be a fast friend by the end of the day!
3. Help me get a reporter, interviewer, health corresponder, editor or anyone that may feature this on the local news or newspaper. Help us create awareness!!!
