I am a wife and mother of two wonderful children, I am a nurse but recently lost my job as an Asthma/Allergy nurse due to my health and Ulcerative Colitis. I have a passion for running and am trying to get more active after having several surgeries over the last year. After countless medications and trips to the doctor my efforts to get my Ulcerative Colitis in remission failed. I was referred to The Cleveland Clinic where my medical journey was just beginning. In November of 2014 I had my colon removed and had an ileostomy placed. In May of 2015 I had an internal J-pouch made. Finally in August of 2015 I had my final surgery that reversed my ileostomy and connected my new J-pouch. Although the surgery has saved my life, each day is still a struggle to maintain my health and positive attitude. I still unfortuantely spend a lot of time in the bathroom. I also have severe joint aches from the autoimmune component of ulcerative colitis and experience a lot of fatigue. Trips to the store or anywhere I planned out to make sure I'm feeling well enough to go. Anxiety from not being able to find a restroom in time is also a worry. So, ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are both types of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). IBD affects 1.6 million Americans. These diseases tend to run in families and can affect male or females. So it is my goal to raise as much money as possible to help with advancements in research and finding a cure for Crohn's and Colitis. The Crohns and Colitis Foundation (CCFA) is a non-profit, volunteer driven organization dedicated to finding cures for Crohn's and Colitis. So I have decided to participate in a sprint triathlon on August 13th at Prairie View Park in Vicksburg, Michigan. The Girls Best Friend Triathlon by The 3 Disciplines has participants swim 500 meters, bike 12 miles, and run 3 miles. I am training hard and planning my race around bathroom trips to port-a-lets located on the course. I believe the bathroom trips and staying hydrated will be my biggest challenges! Thank you so much for supporting me and this fight!
