Dylan’s passing, for me, was a final wakeup call during a time of great questioning and change. His passing made me sit hard with “What are you doing with your life, your time?” Do you REALLY know??”. “How are you going to live your life right in this moment? “You going to be awake or just going through the motions to please other people and/or make choices/say things you think will be the most pleasing and impressive?” Ultimately, what is real? There were no answers, just, “You had better find out.”
Being in my breath and in my body is the way I feel the realness of me and everyone and everything around me. It is where I feel the connections. I’ve been a lifelong addict of movement and I keep coming back to getting grounded in my body; it started with dancing at age 3 and this need brought me to become a yoga teacher which I do full-time. I am now 44 and I am proud to say I have not allowed my own misgivings, or questions about my fitness or bigness of heart to keep me from immersing myself in my own skin to train and push myself to do something that’s not for myself. I have never done anything like this before.
To put my commitment to the test, I went way out of my comfort zone and joined our team. What exactly are we running you ask? It’s the Ragnar Relay, which is run in locations all over the country. The one we will run is May 9 and 10 on Cape Cod from Hull, MA to Provincetown. In total the race is 1200 miles. Our team is responsible for 200 of those miles. I will run the equivalent of a half-marathon; 13.1 miles. Honestly, I thought I had lost it volunteering myself and did not think I could do it but I simply got over myself and started to train and run and now I know I can do it! Doing it with and for my friends has been the largest inspiration.
To run this event and raise money to support Dylan’s Wings of Change, the foundation Ian and Nicole, Dylan’s parents, have created in his memory is the least I can do to honor him and support Ian and Nicole’s work. They are trying to bring focus, answers and help to other kids with Autism and special needs. The foundation provides funding for technology and extra support for the education of these kids. They also provide funding for inclusion of kids with Autism and special needs in sports and for creating sporting activities. A really nice balance.
These kids want answers. They don’t know why they’re different and feel separate. Boy do I get that.
I am beyond grateful everyday for the lessons Dylan has taught me and how much stronger and confident I have gotten through this training. Now I know the physical ability is in place I need to focus on the fundraising; my goal is $2,000.00. Here’s the deal; you give the money, I’ll train and our team will run this thing and do the rest. Then we all get some happy kids on the other end who will have opportunities they would not without our financial and physical help.
Please, make a donation; I simply need your help to do this. Find me on Dylan’s team at http://www.crowdrise.com/teamdylancapecod2014/fundraiser/lisaloring
I thank you with all of my heart. Lisa
