EVENT: Boston Marathon 2014

Lisa Russell

I am very excited, and to be honest when I really think about it probably slightly nervous, to be a part of the 2014 MGH Boston marathon team. The excitement comes from the personal thrill of challenge and I think running the Boston marathon will be just that! The slight nervousness comes from the thought of me being selected to represent the MGH Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Team.
Running a marathon is a challenge in itself but the challenges and struggles that the children of MGH face in their fight with cancer far exceeds the pains I will face training and then running 26.2 miles. I know this from personal experience because 23 years ago I was a patient at MGH where I received a liver transplant at the young age of 8. Having gone from a healthy, lively, young child, in less than a month, to the need for a liver transplant due to complete liver failure I was steadfast in persevering to once again be the strong, healthy, tenacious youngster everyone knew.
Then after 8 years of full health I became a familiar face of the MGH Pediatric Hematology and Oncology unit as I was treated for Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma due to complications as a result of my liver transplant in 1990. Being a strong willed and ambitious person, even as a child and teenager facing medical challenges, I was always determined to fight my latest setback and not let it stop me from my next big adventure.
So today 23 years after my first exposure to the fabulous medical care at MGH and having built invaluable doctor, nurse, and patient friendships I now very much want and I am truly excited to help fight pediatric cancer one step at a time by running in the 2014 Boston marathon. I will not just be running in the Boston marathon, but more importantly running and raising funds to help these young children currently fighting their battle with cancer and those who will be diagnosed in the future.
Funds raised are directed to cancer care and research initiatives that enhance the quality of life for the hospital’s youngest cancer patients. Your donations will hopefully allow many more children like me the opportunity to one day overcome the disease that was once challenging them. I am a vibrant healthy young woman today because people like you cared enough to donate to MGH and the children they serve.
I greatly thank you for all of your support and would love for you to pass this on to anyone you know who would like to donate!
