What do 6 seconds mean to you? It's an odd question, I know. I finished the 2013 Boston Marathon in 3:45:06. My qualifying time was 3:45:00. I couldn't believe it! What? 6 seconds? I wasn't even sprinting!! I had more in me. I could have qualified. I was wallowing in my selfish defeat with my head on my best friend's shoulder and then the bombs went off. In an instant 6 seconds didn't matter anymore. I ushered that same best friend and some other close friends off Boylston Street, and when we were all safe, 6 seconds mattered again. I was going to run Boston 2014, but I did not qualify. I could not for the life of me figure out why. I had a lot more legs left in me to sprint over that finish line and qualfiy, but I did not check my watch and thought I had 30 seconds to bank.
Opportunity. What does that mean? I did not grow up with what I have today. We had food stamps and lived in apartment buildings, but I had opportunity. I had the opportunity to be and do whatever I wanted if I just had the desire, will and drive to succeed. Today I am a lawyer, physical therapist, 20 time marathon finisher, and 4 time Ironman finisher (with the help of that best friend I mentioned). We can do that here in the United States. We have the world at our fingertips, but in some countries they have nothing, not even opportunity.
6 seconds and opportunity. Maybe 6 seconds for me was my chance to help provide opportunity to those who have my same desire, will and drive. There are people who want to thrive, who want to help themselves, who want to provide their family with a meal today, tomorrow and the next day. Self Help Africa provides families with the resources and tools to farm their own land. Self Help Africa provides opportunity, not just food, but opportunity and a future.
