OCD is a very large part of my life along with depression which can work together. At the age of 12 my parents noticed something was different about me, I was always cracking my knuckles a certain amount of times or I would believe something would happen to my family if I didn't do the ritual, there was also the constant checking etc. My parents took me to my pediatrician and was given Valium to help me relax, which is not what I needed but OCD was not really something people were aware of in the mid 70's.
I went through my teens the best I could, always nervous and worrying but I guess it just became part of my life after awhile. I married my husband at 21, I continued to work as a hairstylist, while in therapy and on medications. At the age of 26 we had our son Corey who is now 20 years old and going to college for mechanical engineer. About 4 years ago I became an inpatient of Mcleans OCD Institute and stayed about 8 weeks, hardest but best thing I ever did for myself. They had us in groups, doing different types of therapy such as exposure therapy ERP, Meetings with Doctors, therapist, med doctors, personal coaches that worked with us 1 on 1, I met about 20 people that also suffered from OCD but all in different ways and the age range was from 16-60, some came as far as Alberta Canada, Virginia, New York...
These days I am so thankful for my husband of 25 years, our son Corey, my parents, sister and my wonderful friends, it is hard for them to understand
but they are always there to pick me up... I continue to see my therapist, I also take medications daily and try to attend the monthly meetings at Mcleans.. I am also still a hairstylist which I enjoy...My goal since the last walk I did last year is to make people aware that mental illness, OCD etc. can affect anyone at any age, male or female, mother, father, children, etc. and that's why we have to break the Stigma about Mental Illness........ I thank my family, friends and I have a lot of Faith...
If you could give a donation, any amount would be great, it would be greatly appreciated, Thank you. Lisa Leger Cormier
